Properly abandoned wells set according to regulations and accepted engineering requirements are not a threat to surrounding water aquifers and soil. Recommendations to improve well abandonment are as follows.
Abandoned well interface assessment Completion of an abandoned well interface assessment should be completed before permits and leasing is finalized as well as site preparation. Bioremediation of sub-surface formations: Post gas extraction can leave hazardous hydrocarbons and ether wastes in the fractures of the sub-surface. The cleanup of these hazardous wastes can be achieved by the introduction of biodegrading bacteria with a sufficient oxygen source [1]. Simultaneous introduction of sodium percarbonate coated with polyvinylidine chloride as a solid oxygen source during hydraulic fracturing will establish colonies of bacteria within the fractures [1]. The bacteria will then digest these contaminates leading to the degradation of hazardous materials within the sub-surface of a post-production gas well.
