Background
The recent merging of hydraulic fracturing with horizontal drilling techniques has developed a revolutionary new approach of tapping into natural gas resources. Before the advent of this technology, these natural gas reserves were not economical viable. However, with
the interest into environmentally friendly alternative fuels growing, it was only a matter of time before a “bridge fuel” such as natural gas was exploited. The fact that natural gas releases half as much CO2 as coal, and with future natural gas prices predicted to continue plummeting, the potential for power plants that running on natural gas has become a reality. The possibility for a stabilization of CO2 levels has been met with praise by both industry and policy sectors. However, a growing concern for potential negative human impacts has left the public wary of this potentially beneficial operation. |
