Benign Chemical Tracers
Also known as tagging, placing natural and environmentally friendly chemicals in fracking fluid would allow the specific oil company responsible to be identified in the event of contamination. It can discredit the claim that contamination was pre-existing or that the contamination was natural. If specific companies are assigned their own tracer, knowing which company is responsible would be simple. The executive director of the COGCC stated that chemical tracers was not proposed in the rule-making process for 2009, but cities and regions of Colorado such as Grand Junction and Pallisade have begun to enter agreements calling for the utilization of benign tracers (Williams, 2009).
3,000 Feet Limit
There should be a regulation calling for fracking operations to happen 3,000 feet away from residential homes and areas. If an operator chooses to drill closer to a residential area, they will be held liable under Presumptive Liability laws. In case of contamination, they will automatically be held liable because they are drilling within the 3,000 foot range.
